Dangers of asbestos

Workers' representatives from across Yorkshire are converging on Sheffield today to attend a conference highlighting the dangers posed by asbestos.

The conference, hosted by the Trades Union Congress, will hear from Sheffield Coroner Christopher Dorries, Rotherham consultant respiratory physician Dr Gurnam Basran and TUC regional secretary Bill Adams.

The event takes place in Sheffield Cathedral Conference Centre and has been staged with the help of Yorkshire law firms Raleys Solicitors and Thompsons.

Carol Gill, industrial disease specialist with Raleys, said: "There's still a terrifying number of people who have been or are being exposed to asbestos in the workplace.

"An increasing number of cases are being diagnosed in individuals who may have less intense exposure, such as workers in the building industry, and it's believed that these now represent the majority of new cases."
